- Acclimate 24 hours in the room it is going into.
- No separate underlay — the IXPE is already bonded to the plank, and the sound figures above are measured on it.
- Leave the perimeter expansion gap your installer specifies.
- Suitable over in-floor heating up to a surface temperature of 29 °C.
- Core
- High-density fibreboard. Wood, compressed.
- Water
- The weak point. Water that reaches a joint swells the core, and swollen board does not go back down.
- Underfoot
- Hard and loud without a separate underlay, which you buy and lay yourself.
- Core
- Limestone powder bound in PVC. No wood fibre anywhere in it, so there is nothing to swell.
- Water
- The core is not damaged by water. Standing water still has to be cleared — the subfloor beneath it is not waterproof.
- Underfoot
- 1.5 mm IXPE underlay is bonded to the plank at the factory. Nothing separate to buy, nothing to lay, nothing to get wrinkled — and the published sound figures are measured on it.
- Subfloor
- Rigid, so it bridges small irregularities a thin glue-down vinyl would telegraph.
- Core
- Polymer foamed with air. Thicker board for the same job.
- Water
- Also unaffected by water.
- Underfoot
- The warmest and quietest of the three. The reason people choose it.

Every click floor in a showroom has a printed photograph of wood on top. They differ in what sits under that photograph — and that core decides what happens when a dishwasher leaks, how the floor sounds underfoot, and how flat the subfloor has to be.
The cheapest click floor, and fine in a dry bedroom. It is the wrong floor for a kitchen, a bathroom or a basement, whatever the box says about water resistance.
Dense and dimensionally stable — which is why it is the one that goes into kitchens, basements and rentals. It is also the hardest of the three underfoot; stone core is stone core.
Softer and more forgiving to walk on, and correspondingly easier to dent under a fridge leg or a dropped tool. Thicker, heavier to ship, and dearer per square foot.
The number to compare is the wear layer, not the total thickness. The wear layer is the clear film over the printed decor, measured in mil, and it is what stands between a chair leg and the picture. A thicker core makes a quieter floor; only a thicker wear layer makes a longer-lasting one. Ask every supplier for that figure — including us.
What a stone-polymer core does that laminate does not, the 20 MIL wear layer in context, full specification, laying notes, box and pallet quantities, and all three price channels.
